Jon Kuhlmann wins men's club championship
By Bruce Olson
Sports Editor
The Kuhlmann name has
been synonymous with golfing excellence in Montevideo for many
years. Jon Kuhl-mann added to that legacy Sunday when he won his
first men's match play championship at The Crossings.
Kuhlmann defeated Bill Gordon 3-and-2 in the championship match.
Kuhlmann's father, Roger, won the club championship in 1971.
Jon's older sister, Barb, was the ladies' club champion in 1975,
and his younger sister, Mary, won the ladies' title in 1984 and
1985.
Kuhlmann, a 46-year-old insurance agent, opened Sunday's play
with a 2-and-1 win over Kevin Olson. He made consecutive birdies
on the 15th and 16th holes to oust two-time defending champion
Kevin McFarland in the next round. In the semifinals, Kuhlmann
edged Bryce Nordaune 1-up.
