McFarland defends men’s club tourney championship By Bruce Olson Sports Editor Kevin McFarland defeated Jeff Anderson on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win his second straight men’s club match play championship at The Crossings Sunday. Both players agreed that the key point of the match occurred on the 16th green in the seventh hole of the nine-hole match. Anderson spun his second shot to within less than three feet of the cup, while McFarland was facing a fast downhill putt of more than 30 feet. McFarland made the putt to match Anderson’s birdie and keep the match deadlocked. McFarland made a scrambling par from left of the green on the 17th hole and Anderson just missed his birdie putt. With the match still even, both players tried to reach the green on the short par 4 18th. McFarland pushed his drive below the clubhouse leaving an extremely difficult second shot. Anderson’s drive ended up below and left of the green, leaving him an easier second shot. It took McFarland two chips to get his ball on the green and he ended up bogeying the hole. Anderson pitched his ball within 15 feet of the hole, but he was left with a downhill putt that was virtually impossible to stop and he, too, bogeyed the hole. McFarland’s tee shot on the 206-yard first hole in the playoff landed just right of the green. Anderson’s ball landed right of the green between two trees with a poor lie and was unable to get his second shot on the green. McFarland chpped on and made a short putt for par to end the match. Brett Andrews fired a 1-over-par 73 to earn medalist honors in Saturday’s qualifying round.
