Golf program decision delayed until October

The discussion lasted for an hour and when all was said and done, no final decision was reached at the Sept. 15 school board meeting about reinstating the junior and senior high golf programs. However, a committee was formed to bring a recommendation to the board in October.

At a March 25 special board meeting, the board had directed Bob Grey, athletic director, to cut $15,000 from the athletic budget. On April 3, Grey reported he had surveyed all the coaches about ways to reduce expenditures and could cut only $4,400, so if $15,000 had to be cut, golf would need to be cut.

A motion to eliminate the program failed on a tie 3-3 vote. Two months later the board voted 3-2 in June to eliminate the golf program.

But supporters of the golf program subsequently raised a hue and cry and worked to rally enough support so the board would reverse the decision. At least a 4-2 vote will be required to overturn the June decision.
